Phonic FM will be adding an SSDAB service to its existing FM service from May 2022. As part of a consortium of individuals and other radio stations (including Community Station Riviera FM and local commercial service Radio Exe) working together under the name ExeDab Phonic will continue its output based on a “No adverts – no playlists” format to the Greater Exeter area. The station is also in the process of applying for its third extension FM licence.
Based in the basement of Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre (but completely independent from it) Phonic aims to support Arts (in the widest sense) in the Exeter area. In addition to its wide range of speech and music-based programming promotes a wide range of events and gigs to support itself financially. The wider range of signal will enable it to serve the rapidly growing areas around the city, including the ‘new’ town of Cranbrook and neighbouring areas in Teignbridge and East Devon.
It also benefits from the ability to broadcast ‘live’ sessions from The Sound Gallery recording studios adjacent to it in the basement, as well as the main auditorium of the building which has a capacity of 800.
As a shareholder in the consortium, Phonic recognises the importance of collaborative work in bringing the scheme to fruition, with an excellent working relationship with Riviera FM (Torbay based) and particularly Radio Exe with whom it enjoys a very close working relationship.
