The report from the Committee for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has published it’s report about the role of the tech giants and the rise of fake news.
The overall argument is that self-regulation by the tech companies is no longer viable, and that the supposed model of ‘net neutrality’ that the tech companies have prospered under is damaging our politics and civil life because there is little accountability in the process.
Simon Jenkins, writing in The Guardian suggests that:
In years to come, the present painful, stumbling, inept steps towards regulating cyberspace will seem laughable. The only question is how much damage will be done before this vast, monopolistic industry is brought to heel.
