Celebrating Resonance's 18th Birthday on Friday 1st May 2020

Resonance FM celebrates its 18th Birthday on Friday 1 May 2020!

Dear Resonance supporter,

At first we figured it might last a year - and that it would be mostly remembered as an enigmatic experiment to be endlessly discussed down the pub in a nostalgic fug. Listeners, the press and even tv’s Richard & Judy thought it was an elaborate kind of joke, something too wayward and eccentric to last. But 18 years on, with on-line visitors passing the one million mark last year and now available on both FM in central London and DAB in Greater London, Resonance has come of age.

With a global reputation as a unique and influential broadcast platform - thanks to its dozens of extraordinary contributors and pool of volunteer engineers - Resonance FM has been rightly hailed as “the best radio station in London” (Guardian), “the UK’s most creative independent radio station” (Telegraph) and “the voice of London” (Time Out). It is (says The Big Issue) “a gallery of possibilities on the radio dial - if you can’t find at least five programmes on their playlist that intrigue you, then you really should be broadening your horizons!”

To celebrate its 18th birthday, from midnight on Friday 1st May 2020, Resonance FM presents a day-long schedule of fifty special broadcasts, including contributions by…

Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Engineers (radio artists), Bram Thomas Arnold (conceptual artist, pedestrian), Mark Bedford (Madness), Johny Brown (The Band of Holy Joy), Viv Corringham (Shadow-walks), Chris Cutler (Henry Cow; ReR Megacorp), Benedict Drew (video artist; co-curator Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2018), Bronac Ferran (writer; curator Design & The Concrete Poem), Sharon Gal (Diggers; Meltaot), Juliet Jacques (author, Trans: A Memoir), Caroline Kraabel (saxophonist, London Improvisers Orchestra), Neil Luck (composer; ARCO), Jude Cowan Montague (The News Agents), Anthony Moore (Slapp Happy), Flora Pitrolo (A Colder Consciousness), Lucia Scazzocchio (Social Broadcasts), Art Terry (Is Black Music), Jonny Trunk (The OST Show), Sarah Washington (Tonic Train), Ben Watson (Late Lunch with Out To Lunch), Dan Wilson (Oscillatorial Binnage), and Tony White (author, The Fountain in the Forest) .

Plus we have Tate Modern’s Donald Hyslop in conversation with Resonance FM co-founder Ed Baxter; we’ve scoured the archives for early career sessions by the likes of Sleaford Mods, Kate Tempest and Savages to fill the occasional gaps; and we’ve a unique hour long concert by the trio of John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Steve Noble (Rip Rig & Panic), all keen supporters of Resonance from its inception.
